William Apess was an advocate for the rights of his Native American people. According to the Norton Anthology he was the offset printing Native American to write and publish an autobiography( 1051). Although there is some controversy about the whereabouts of Apess birth, almost critics regard that Apess was born on January 31, 1798 in Colrain Massachusetts.
