Gracie Jiu-Jitsu originated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A man named Carlos Gracie helped a Japanese attack aircraft Count Coma Maeda settle into Brazil. For his gratitude he taught Carlos the traditional Japanese art of Jiu-Jitsu. Carlos then taught others that art. However Jiu Jitsu requires a certain add up of speed and strength that his brother Helio didn¡¯t have, therefore Helio Gracie began to diversity and modify it and the transformation is what is now called Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Helio who had created his own form of armed combat fought many challenge matches in Brazil and established a great credibility to the system in Brazil. His son Rorion than move to the United States in 1978 to establish GJJ in America.

Rorion then decided to border this idea in a larger scale and created the ultimate Fighting Championships, which is the first televised no holds barred event, to publicly ostentation GJJ against other airs of combat. The UFC was to answer the age old question which style was better, how would a karate guy do against a kick meat packer or a kung fu guy.
