In Catcher in the Rye, J.D Salinger has created Holden Caulfield to show the idea of experiencing difficulties of emergence out of childhood innocence and into prominenthood. By in effect using a narrative point-of-view and making Holden an unreliable narrator, Salinger postulates the readers to explore the thoughts of a troubled teenager in denial of growing up when faced with the harsh negative side of adulthood. through with(predicate) Holdens interactions and conflict, Salinger highlights the idea that it is inevitable children will grow up to be adults.
Salinger has used Holden to show the idea of alienation as a produce of self-protection which is an internal conflict. In the novel, Holden alienates himself from the adult ordering and creates a layer of cynicism as a form of protection from the phonies in his perspective of the adult world. The nuns showed intelligence and insight as we can assume they proverb through Holden and his pessimistic views. They showed sympathy and struck a converse close to Romeo and Juliet (literature) with Holden to shine light on adulthood. However Holden was not comfortable because it contained sexual references. We can see through Holden and say that he is immature and not ready for the adult society as he tries to spare the feelings of the nuns when they arent bothered about it.
