The graphic novel American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang, involves three par everyel, but distinct, stories that interlock in the end. The first is about a young Chinese boy, Jin Wang who is heavily influenced by Chinese culture. Jin Wang moves from Chinatown, San Francisco to a new school, where he promptly realizes he is the only Chinese boy in the faultless school. The second reputation, the Monkey business leader, king of Flower-Fruit Mountain, overhears the details of a dinner party and decides to attend. Upon arriving, the hosts of the dinner party did not allow him in because he is a monkey that is not wearing shoes. Lastly, the three story involves a young popular American boy named Danny who loses his popularity at school when his Chinese cousin Chinkee comes to stay with his family. Danny speedily becomes embarrassed by Chinkees behavior and the Chinese sort out automatically applied to Chinkee at Dannys school. Although these three stories all involve different characters and settings, the overall experiences described in severally story are similar. The universal problem faced by all the characters in their stories is that of prejudice, particularly against individuals of Chinese heritage.
