Professor Lidenbrock decides to lock everyone in the house and force himself and the others to go without food until he cracks the code. Axel discovers the answer and decides to keep it hidden from the prof, barely after two days without food, he cannot stand the thirstiness and reveals his secret to his uncle. Lidenbrock translates the note and discovers that Saknussemm has been to the center of the Earth.
The professor is a man of impatience, and departs for Iceland immediately, taking his nephew with him. Axel repeatedly tries to reason with him, explaining his fear of descending into a volcano and why the journey is impossible. He fails to make the professor see his point of view.
When they arrive in Reykjavik, they hire Hans Bjelke as their guide and travel over land to the base of the volcano. In late June they reach the volcano, which has tether craters. According to the message, the passage to the center of the Earth is through the one crater that is touched by the shadow of a nearby mountain peak at noon. The text also states that this is only true during the last day of June. During the next few days the weather is too involved for shadows. Axel silently rejoices, but on the last day the insolate comes out and shows the correct crater to take.
