Descartes

In part IV of Descartes Discourse on the Method, Descartes is nerve-wracking to prove his own reality. He begins by taking foreverything that was probationary and throwing it out. This includes anything derived from our senses since our senses can decieve us; anything that had previously been argued as true because manpower make mistakes in their reasoning; and finally he discards anything that has ever entered ours minds as no more real, than a dream. While overture up with these legal opinions, he soon was led to the popular thought I am thinking, therefore I exist. Basically, this thought implies that since he is able to think, he therefore must exist.
While move to prove his existence, Descartes then stumbles upon a new notion. Descartes states, Next, I reflected on the fact that I was doubting, and that consequently I wasnt all in all perfect (for I saw clearly that it is a great perfection to know than to doubt). This led me to the question: Where did I bulge out my ability to think of something moren perfect than I am? and I drew the obvious conclusion that this ability had to come fromâ€"had to be caused byâ€"something that was in fact more perfect than me. (Descartes, Mediations 1641) It is at this point the reading takes a turn. He then begins to inform his reasoning on why god must truely existent.



Descartes argues that without a perfect of infinte being such as God, our clear and intelligible thoughts of a God cannot be true. Basically, we cannot have the idea of God without it being placed in us by God. He states it had been placed in me by a Nature which was unfeignedly more perfect than mine could be, and which had within itself all the perfections of which I could form any idea. Based on his reasoning, there had to be a God.
After reading Mediations and seeing his thoughts on the existence of a God, I was convinced about the existence of God.
